UnderWorld

UnderWorld is a StGermain parallel modelling framework Geoscience research code, which utilises a Lagrangian particle-in-cell finite element scheme (the prototype of which is the Ellipsis code), visualised using gLucifer.

UnderWorld (Monash University) is under development as part of the AuScope nation-wide Geosciences infrastructure program. (Formerly it was a project as part of the Australian Computational Earth Systems Simulator (ACcESS) MNRF).

UnderworldReleases is the place for the latest information on getting the right version of the code.

Users wanting a standalone copy of UnderWorld can just get the latest release tarball by clicking on the "Download UnderWorld Now!" button to the right. Then proceed to instructions on getting set up to use your chosen release. Note: this tarball copy of UnderWorld cannot be updated to a later version - for instructions on how to download an updateable copy, please see UnderworldReleases.

Those looking for help with using Stable Builds on our supported supercomputers can go straight to StableBuildOptions.

See UnderworldFAQ for frequently asked questions. For those developing UnderWorld or interested in tracking features in development, check out the Underworld Issue and Bug Tracking Trac.

Geophysics Modelling using UnderWorld: essential capabilities, and user's guide

As a key part of the UnderWorld effort, we maintain a core set of community-maintained example models, which demonstrate the physics-modelling capabilities of the software, and provide "templates" from which researchers can build their own more advanced/specialised models.

From a software perspective, these models also act as "system tests", and allow us to ensure that the capability of UnderWorld to solve core problems of interest never degrades as we continually add new features.

Each of these models is linked from the page UnderworldModels - which also includes documentation and advice for understanding the XML files that define the models, and suggestions for how to create your own. However, if you'd like to jump straight to an overview of the different physics-modelling capabilites these examples demonstrate, you can browse them directly from the list below.

UnderWorld User Documentation Quick Links

It is recommended that new users start by using the links in the sections above on this page, or proceed to UnderworldReleases to go straight to instructions on how to download and install UnderWorld.

An offline html snapshot of the user documentation on this website is available for download for the UnderWorld releases Underworld-1.1.0 and Underworld-1.0.0-rc2.

UnderWorld Code Development

The main place for code developers of UnderWorld is the Underworld Issue and Bug Tracking Trac. However, you may need to get an account first - see below.

Getting a Subversion account to commit to the code

To be able to modify the UnderWorld source code, you must first register on this and the VPAC websites (links below). We strongly recommend you nominate the same username and password for both registrations, to simplify things.

Once you have acquired Wiki usernames and passwords, you will need to contact JohnSpencer to get commit privileges enabled for your account. You can then refer to the UnderworldReleases page for instructions on how to download and install a copy of UnderWorld from the Subversion repository.
