Monash and Other Funding Opportunities
Listed below are a number of Monash University, Australian Research Council and other funding opportunities available to current Monash staff and students, and those of you who wish to join us. This list will be updated throughout the year as new opportunities arise.
Monash University has established the Monash Fellowship scheme to attract internationally competitive researchers to undertake research of national and international significance; provide research support to successful Australian based researchers wishing to move to Monash University to enhance their research career; and to encourage early career researchers who have already been or will be appointed to continuing positions at Monash University.
Applications are invited from researchers in any discipline with two to eight years of post-doctoral research experience, calculated from the date of submission of PhD thesis, and with demonstrated research outcomes at international level. Funding can include:
Full Fellowship: This category is open to researchers in any discipline from outside Monash University.
Fellowship Support Grant: The Fellowship Support Grant is open to successful Australian based researchers from all disciplines wishing to move to Monash University to enhance their research career.
Time Release Award: This 12 Month Time Release Award is open to existing Monash University staff only, primarily from humanities and social sciences, although not restricted to these disciplines.

The Monash Research Fund will provide funding to support internationally competitive research, by individuals or teams of researchers in Faculty identified areas of research strength or emerging potential.
MRF New Research Areas: Aimed at helping faculties to target promising new research opportunities, or enable significant new developments in areas which the faculty has identified as research strengths.
Applications due: October 2004
MRF Postdoctoral Fellowships: Intended to support top level scholars to work on particular initiatives in areas of identified research strength or emerging research potential.
Applications due: November 2004
MRF Project Grants: Intended to complement external competitive funding, by enabling Monash researchers who have narrowly missed gaining external funding to commence their projects and position them to apply successfully in a subsequent round.

Travel Grants provide support for Monash academic staff and students to present papers at international research conferences (including international conferences hosted within Australia). Limited support may also be available for visits to prestigious institutions, or to facilitate high quality international research interactions.
Please note that researchers may receive only one Travel award in any single calendar year, therefore researchers receiving funding in round 1 cannot apply for funding in round 2.

The objectives of the ARC Linkage–Projects are primarily to encourage and develop long-term strategic research alliances between higher education institutions and industry in order to apply advanced knowledge to problems, or to provide opportunities to obtain national economic or social benefits. Funding can include Australian Postdoctoral Fellowships Industry (APDI); Australian Postgraduate Awards Industry (APAI) and Linkage Industry Fellowships.
Monash Application Deadline: 11 Nov 2004 (ARC Deadline: 26 Nov. 2004)
Linkage–International Awards provide funds to Australian-based researchers towards the direct costs of the collaboration for a period of up to three years. Applications for support may be for collaboration with any appropriate researcher in any country or countries. To be eligible for consideration, each Linkage International Awards application must have at least one Australian-based Chief Investigator (who is a CI on at least one current ARC funded grant). The minimum Linkage–International Award grant is $5,000.

The Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing operates a National Facility which provides Australian researchers and postgraduate students (through their supervisors) at Australian universities and the CSIRO with resources on one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. The APAC Merit Allocation Scheme allows researchers to access the APAC National Facility based on merit and free of charge.
Deadline for Application: late April and October for allocations to start in the following July and January
